If you find yourself wandering through the vibrant streets of Sham Shui Po, a visit to Kuroiwa Ramen is an absolute must. Nestled within the Cheung Lee Building on Cheung Sha Wan Road, this ramen sanctuary offers an authentic taste of Japan, attracting locals and food enthusiasts alike.
The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a cozy, albeit slightly dated, atmosphere that exudes the charm of a traditional ramen shop. While some may find the decor lacking, it’s the rich, soulful flavors that truly matter. As they say, don't judge a book by its cover, and at Kuroiwa, it’s the food that takes center stage.
One of the standout features of Kuroiwa Ramen is their broth. Regulars rave about the depth and complexity, with many likening it to the authentic soups you’d encounter in Kyushu, Japan. Customer reviews consistently highlight the thick and rich broth, though recent feedback indicates a shift toward a slightly thinner and oilier variant; yet, it remains a highlight of their offerings. Both the original ramen and the unique shrimp soup have garnered praise for their bold flavors and comforting warmth.
The torch-flamed pork is another culinary treasure not to be missed. Tender and juicy, it is lovingly prepared to perfection, balancing savory and rich notes. For those torn between options, the jumbo meal allows you to indulge in both slow-cooked pork and pork belly, ensuring each bite is satisfying. Vegetarian and spice enthusiasts will also appreciate the Spicy Ramen and Shrimp Ramen, each crafted with care and rich flavor profiles.
However, it’s important to approach your visit with a flexible mindset; while the food receives high marks for taste, some diners have raised concerns regarding hygiene, especially with regards to food handling practices. As owners and patrons alike aim for a truly delightful experience, there’s room for enhancement in this area.
What truly sets Kuroiwa Ramen apart, aside from its flavorful offerings, is the spirit of community it nurtures. The service is casual yet friendly, with a self-service aspect that offers a unique dining experience. Ordering through a QR code adds an element of modern convenience, allowing you to focus on the culinary delights that await.
Whether you're a ramen aficionado or simply searching for a comforting meal, make your way to Kuroiwa Ramen. Here, the enticing aromas and authentic flavors promise to transport you straight to the heart of Japan, making each visit feel like a warm embrace in a bowl.

I went here a couple of times a few years ago and remember the soup being extremely thick and rich. Nowadays it’s thinner and slightly oilier but still the best ramen in Hong Kong. We got the ramen served in 13 minutes. It was soooo nice. Get the hard noodles + torch flamed pork!!!!!! (I would also love if they had grated sesame or raw garlic by the table). Regardless, this is seriously the best authentic ramen and the ratings of this place need to be higher (I think the chef is Japanese)

Absolutely delicious local ramen joint. It was a surprise we found this place walking through Sham Shui Po. The broth of the original ramen was very authentic, just like what you get in Kyushu, Japan. Slow-cooked pork and pork belly are both made very rich in taste, if you can't choose then get a jumbo meal for both. The shrimp soup is delicious too. Service was ok. Recommend this place for people who are tired of everyday ramen places.

food was actually great and tasted like Ramen that would have cost over a hundred. however, the shop interior is slightly old which then made me feel their food cannot charge higher even if they wanted to. hygiene was also a big issue. I ordered a bowl of rice but they didn't have rice. the server took an empty bowl to the shop next door and brought back a bowl of rice unwrapped and he went back and forth with my bowl of rice out the street a few times. food was great but maybe should improve hygiene practice ?

Pork belly is tender and nicely roasted. The shrimp soup is delicious, the soup is rich in shrimp taste. Recent seasonal ramen is curry, the curry is not too special with a bit of sourness. Order through QR code, and waiter will serve you. Self-service for cold water.
